We are dedicated to supporting every member of our community, especially those affected by dementia. To this end, our Housing Officer, David Draper and Housing Apprentice, Helen Lin have recently participated in the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends training. This training is part of our broader initiative to foster an inclusive culture that values every individual, ensuring that compassion and understanding are at the heart of Pine Court Housing.
Understanding Dementia Friends
A Dementia Friend is someone trained to understand the various challenges that those with dementia and their families face. These individuals commit to using their knowledge to help improve the lives of people living with the condition by fostering understanding and support within the community.
The need for Dementia Friends
Unfortunately, many living with dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends help bridge this gap, enhancing understanding and empathy through simple, everyday actions that significantly enrich the lives of those affected by dementia. Whether it’s offering a friendly visit or just showing patience, every little gesture can have a profound impact. This not only helps to make daily life better for those with dementia but also cultivates a culture of compassion and support within our community.
Training Outcomes
David and Helen described the training as enlightening, providing them with essential insights into practical support strategies for individuals with dementia. The knowledge gained has equipped them to advocate for and implement supportive measures that significantly enhance the wellbeing of affected individuals.
Here’s how David and Helen described their Dementia Friends training experience:
The Dementia Friends training was an eye-opener for us. We learned heaps about how to better support our community members with dementia. The trainers made everything super interactive and welcoming, so we could ask questions and really get into the topic. We’ve come away feeling more equipped and confident to make a real difference. Anyone looking to get a better grasp of dementia support should definitely give this training a go—it’s a game changer!
