Stay safe from end of tax year scam

April 10, 2025

Please be aware that scammers often target individuals around key tax periods, including the end of the tax year in early April. It’s crucial to be vigilant and protect yourself from scam activity.

Warning signs: what to look for

  • Fake HMRC communications: Be cautious of emails, texts, or calls claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
  • Spoofed caller ID: Scammers can make their number appear as HMRC’s. Always verify by calling HMRC directly using a known, official number.
  • Pressure tactics: Be suspicious of anyone demanding immediate payment with threats of arrest or legal action.
  • Suspicious links: Avoid clicking on links in messages that contain misspellings, shortened URLs, or urgent language.
  • Requests for personal information: HMRC will never ask for sensitive details like your bank card number or PIN. Do not share this information.

Protect yourself: what to do

If you receive a suspicious email, text, or call:

  • Stop: Do not engage with the message.
  • Don’t respond: Do not reply to the sender.
  • Avoid interaction: Do not click on any links or open any attachments.
  • Keep information private: Never share personal details.
  • Verify with HMRC: If in doubt, check directly with HMRC through their official channels.
  • Report suspicious activity: Report scams online, forward suspicious emails to HMRC at phishing@hmrc.gov.uk, and send suspicious texts to 60599.
